hey everyone, i now officially have a new LJ since the password keeps getting reset on this one and it annoys the shit out of me, plus now i can kind of shut this one down and consider it a representation of my years in University, especially since i've been running this fucker since August 7th, 2002.

what an amazing/relaxing weekend i must say. Dale came over Thursday after we couldn't get in to see Silent Hill, so we shot the shit and watched The New Guy, such a good spring/summer movie. Friday i literally didn't leave my apartment except to bike to the gym and back until my friend Mandy from worked picked me up and we saw Inside Man, which was actually a pretty good movie if not a bit predictable. Saturday i spent the day at my parents and watched so much playoff hockey it was ridiculous, i have a feeling that that will be taking up a good chunk of my time in the coming weeks. yesterday Aggie, Dany and i hit up a couple places like the Hooper's sale where i got a formica endtable and Beastie Boys 7" for $10, score! we also went to Mulvey Market which has severely decreased in quality of junk since last summer, definitely a bummer.
i apologize to anyone waiting on me to call Budget and figure out the rental car situation, i'm fucking lazy but i hope to do this in the next day or two. more than anything though i'm fucking excited for the fest that i posted about 2 entries ago.
also: digital camera died finally, need to get one pretty soon again.
alsox2: Of Montreal is playing Fargo closer to the end of the summer, holy shit!

my weekend

mood:
sick
music: Of Montreal - Jennifer Louise
2 trips to St James in one day on the bus obviously got me sick, because right now i'm congested, my throat is slightly tender (though way better than first thing this morning) and i have a headache.
yesterday i got my haircut, went to Polo Park looking for a plain hoodie with no luck, bumped into Sabrina and Bayard, went to Into The Music and another thing that i'm forgetting at the moment. some kid from the punk board came by and bought some 7"'s that i was selling, and i also finally found out where our storage locker is so i put all the Halloween/Xmas stuff in there. sadly it was quite a hassle since in the narrow hallway by the lockers someone abandoned one of those enormous round wicker chairs from the 70's, like honestly the stupid thing is probably 5' across, too bad the cushion is infested with the hair of a thousand cats.
after this extremely exciting afternoon i went to D-Jay's for a get together with the Canadian Tire people since one of my old managers is leaving. sadly i'll admit that while i'm glad i attended, at least 50% of that is because the pizza there is awesome, i can't deny it.
at least for my 2 day's off the weather was amazing.

music: Slapshot - Transmission
yesterday was pretty awesome, and boy am i glad i called in sick to work to enjoy it.
started off with hitting up some random stores in Grant Park mall and then downtown with Aggie, kind of half-assedly looking for jeans and a plain hoodie. apparently it is impossible to find a non-shitty plain hoodie (zipup or otherwise) in this city and stores only sell the really thing, crappy kind. i want a thick Champion or Russel Athletic hoodie but i'm at a loss as to where i would even find one. new-ish store in Grant Park has a lot of Penguin and Ben Sherman clothing, makes me want a real job so i can afford some $80 polos. looking for jeans went a lot better and i found the perfect pair at Urban Bakery. my problem is that jeans that fit me in the thighs are always really baggy in the calves, but this pair is awesome, tight all around and no saggy-ass! they were 50% off and then no tax, still cost me $70 though since they're Obey.
afterwards went to Taste of Chaos, which was surprisingly fun considering that all the bands sucked (even Thursday did) and i felt really old. essentially we manned a booth where you could make your own buttons, mainly i handed out stickers and made sure there were supplies on the table so Aaron/Aggie didn't have to run around. Aggie also made me a button that said "Kisses accepted, no minors pls" but i didn't get any kisses to no surprise haha. got many cans of Rockstar energy drink and bumped into a lot of random people which was fun.
10:30 rolled around and we tore down the tables and Aggie and i headed off to the Occidental for Pat's last show with Under Pressure, who were actually the only band i saw play since we got there so late, but at least i didn't have to pay? spoke to Guy, Tyson and Tracy about this Minneapolis trip for Boris/Sunn which we'll likely end up renting a minivan, now i just need to find a place that does unlimited mileage since so far the 2 places i've checked tack on $.15 for each km past 100 per day. which works out to ~$200 plus the rental costs.
anyone know of good/cheap places to rent cars?

musical obsession
Apr. 8th, 2006 | 10:11 am
music: SSD - Dp You Even Care?
so if you've ever read how i explain the cycle of my musical tastes you'll know that i pretty much go in this bizarre cycle where i'll listen to a lot of a certain genre or band for awhile, get a bit bored and then move onto another one. essentially this allows me to stay interested in all the different genres that i actually enjoy. last month i was listening to a ton of noise/power electronics (because of NFF) but now i've moved on to The Residents.

The Residents are amazing for one reason, they have the most interesting back history of any band i could even begin to name. hell, they've been around since the late 70's and there is still no definite proof as to who the members are! 2/4 members are believed to be known but even that isn't for sure. they were almost nominated for a grammy in the 80's too for the album Eskimo which featured home made instruments and a madeup language posing as Inuit.
stylistically they can't be beat, who else could be cool enough to pull off the whole tux, top-hat and giant eyeball mask for that long? not to mention that the artwork on their releases is generally pretty awesome. musically the best part is the weird vocals, since if there's one thing to draw me to a band it's got to be bizarre vocals. not to mention that i just read that currently they have more than 700 songs in their catalogue at this point.
all of this started when i picked up the Duck Stab/Buster & Glen LP in NYC for dirtcheap, such a great album. i do believe that in the near future i'm going to get a Residents tattoo.
for information i suggest:
Wikipedia
Official Residents Page
Great Site for old Residents pictures
if you're going to download some mp3s i suggest Third Reich 'n Roll, Duck Stab or the newest album Animal Lover. this is the best stuff out of the albums i've heard at least.
ps. i fully expect this to receive a minimal amount of replies

chaos is tasty
Apr. 6th, 2006 | 10:58 am
music: Sonic Youth - Master Dik
so Sunday is the big day, yes, Aggie, Ashley and and i are all heading to the Taste of Chaos tour at the MTS center to (i'm guessing) hand out West 49 promo junk to people who like bad music. am i excited? yep, but not for any of the bands haha. the only band i'm remotely interested in is Thursday, and i've seen them already and even then i haven't listened to anything they've put out since Full Collapse. personally i just think it will be funny seeing the type of people who would attend a show such as this, and i full expect to be the oldest person there that isn't the parent of a child there, or in a band. the running joke is that i plan on using my 'VIP pass' to impress little girls into thinking i'm in a band to hit on them, or possibly their mom if they're not old enough. chances are i will actually just spend most of the day disgusted with humanity in general, but feeling great about myself!
i'm kind of surprised as to how tired i've been lately, i'll be watching TV around 11 and then pretty much almost pass out on the couch, only to get up and check my email and then be perfectly awake until 1am.
Aggie is starting to get settled into the apartment, just has lots of stuff to unpack and sort still though.

so my previous entry trying to find someone to see V For Vendetta was less than successful (though i did end up going with another friend). however, someone must want to check out Metal: A Headbanger's Journey with me this week, it's got everything! Lemmy, Dio, Tony Iommi, Bruce Dickinson and even Mayhem!

music: Iron Age - random mp3s
normally i dont care too much about new hardcore bands but damned if this Iron Age LP isn't fucking great, i'll have to definitely purchase this in the near future. speaking of buying stuff, i think i have like 8 packages i'm currently waiting for in the mail, and the number grows ever larger. in fact i just bought a small Man Is The Bastard collection too, ugh i need to slow down.
( partially to brag, partially to keep track, here's what i'm waiting for )
visited the old Canadian Tire last night and it was really fun actually, despite the fact that so many people there are new so i only knew a couple people. hung out for almost an hour including the 30 minutes after it all closed. on the 15th i'm going to a going away party for a manager that is quitting now, she's pretty awesome and has been there way too long so i'm glad to see her move on, turns out she lives just down River from me as well.
man i almost forgot about the Saves the Day show coming up, should be amazing.

music: Weezer - Only In Dreams
something about all this sunshine and warmer weather makes me want to drive around with my friend's while drinking slurpees and listening to the following bands: Less Than Jake, Weezer, Saves the Day, Screeching Weasel and Descendents. this time of year just makes me want to pretend like i'm still in high school for some reason, it's bizarre. though i'm going to be reliving my high school life slightly when i go to the Pal on Saturday with all my high school friends for a birthday, should be strange/awesome. i'm also going out on Friday for a birthday for one of my work friend's, we're going to Coyote's though, so maybe i'll meet a really nice 40 year old mom? haha
plans for a Minneapolis roadtrip May 25th to see Boris / Sunn O))) are coming together nicely, it appears we have a vehicle. anyone else interested in pitching in for gas? preferably people with licenses.
i am so flipping bored at work right now, it's been almost 2 hours since i took a chat!

music: Modern Lovers - Rockin' Shopping Center
yesterday was so ridiculously productive in me getting my life back together and actually owning household things and sorting out everything else. bought two ridiculously huge 'boudiour' lamps from VV for $15 each, one is now on my dresser and the other will probably end up in the living room eventually. also from VV got this hilarious picture of a mountaingoat laminated onto a piece of wood, normally these things are like $20+ but i only paid $5, well worth it. next up we went to Wal-Mart and I finally got myself a set of dishes/bowls/mugs and some utensils, considering I went over a week without anything i was pretty excited, plus they were only $20. i also picked up some light bulbs for the bathroom that has been half dark for almost a month and the aforementioned new lamps (which i really need to take a picture of to show their true awesomeness).
then i sorted through all the records and shit i brought back and actually went about putting them away and re-organizing my shelving unit.
i need someone to go see V for Vendetta and the Benchwarmers (when it comes out) with, who's game?

final NYC entry
Mar. 21st, 2006 | 05:02 pm
last full day here today, then tomorrow afternoon i fly back to Winnipeg. i'm both excited and annoyed since i'm honestly having a lot of fun here, i just wish that i had someone to spend all my days with since wandering around NYC can only stay interesting for so long, especially when i don't even have an iPod to listen to.
Sunday afternoon while talking to my parents on a payphone in the Lower East Side, David Cross walked right past me on the sidewalk, so weird. also, at the fest Thurston Moore was hanging out in the merch room and we both laughed at the same joke, i'm such a fanboy.
Aggie: i got IBC root beers for you, and i guess i'll bring back 2 or 4 cans of Sparks, depending on what i'm allowed. i'll call you after i get back to my parent's place tomorrow evening and then we can maybe hit up some pawn shops on Thurs/Fri with my parents car?

NYC update
Mar. 18th, 2006 | 01:30 pm
mood:
cheerful
some things i've noticed in my travels so far:
1. traffic laws are optional
2. jaywalking is encouraged
3. honking a car horn is the ultimate way of getting your message across
4. losing what direction you're travelling at any given time is extremely easy
5. the shoes i brought aren't great for standing around at shows for 6+ hours
6. even if Brooklyn is nice and warm, chances are are that Manhattan is windy and freezing
7. it's easy to accidentally find famous landmarks (ie: CBGB's, Marcy Playground haha, etc)
8. too many streets are named similar, first day i got lost in Brooklyn, when i should have been lost in Manhattan
9. i really wish i had an mp3 player to listen to
fun stuff i've seen:
1. Union Sq Park (where they shot Kids)
2. Grand Central Station
3. Times Square on St Patrick's Day
4. more Jewish people in 1 day than i've seen in my entire life so far
i've spent a decent amount of money on records, but also a lot on cab rides when i get hopelessly lost.
ps. Aggie i can't find this Asian goods store, but i'll keep looking in that general area today, if not, i found something else that i'm bringing back for you.

music: Pentagram - Last Days Here
pretty uneventful day i suppose, got a haircut and spoke to the bank about my fees for taking out money while i'm in NY, which shouldn't be too bad. later tonight is the City Champs show, which i'm excited about but probably won't stay for the whole thing since i have to get up for work tomorrow at 7AM.
Akron/Family last night was fucking amazing and whoever didn't show up was missing out, barring something insane they will be in my top 3 live bands this year for sure.
finally did some LJ changes that i said i was going to do several entries ago, namely change my own layout/colours, add my Myspace link and give myself a new icon of the crazy eyes i have now.
( large version behind the cut, warning if you're squeamish )
in other news, i really need to listen to more Pentagram.
